Congenital Cataracts
I have had my eye problems from birth due to cataracts. I grew up using public transportation, taxis, walking, and depending on other people for rides. I had many years of standing in below freezing weather fighting snow and ice just to get splashed by a passing bus that did not see me at the stop. This is just a small example of what I had become accustomed to.
Once I started the bioptic driving program, I began to get a new sense of hope for my future. I began to think of all the things I would be able to do by myself. The feeling was wonderful.
After I got my bioptic driving license, I could not wait to start driving. It opened a whole new world for me and my family. My husband is visually impaired and does not drive. Once I started driving, it opened many new doors for me and my family. No more standing in the cold with our child. No more wasting money on taxis. No more waiting for someone else to pick us up and feeling like I was putting them out.
I believe every visually impaired person should have every opportunity to be as independent as possible. The bioptic driving program will allow many visually impaired people to have more freedom and give them a wonderful feeling of self confidence.
